Upholding Human Rights
The upholding of human rights is a fundamental premise of The Abraham Global Peace Initiative. Our exclusive purpose is to contribute and advance the moral and ethical development of the community, work to preserve human life and uphold the administration and enforcement of Canadian law in all this entails. Our objective is to uphold human rights through activities that seek to encourage, support and defend human rights “that have been secured by law, both in Canada and abroad”.[1]
We operate exclusively non-partisan under Canadian human rights law and practice. For our purpose, and in accordance with the Charities Directorate, the “term human rights refers to those individual rights and freedoms, within their prescribed limitations”[2], set out in the following documents:
· The Canadian Bill of Rights[3]
· The Canadian Human Rights Act of 1977[4]
· The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms[5]
· Canada’s Approach to Advancing Human Rights[6]
· Provincial Human Rights Commissions and Tribunals[7]
· Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada[8]
- Victims Bill of Rights
· The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Canada is a signatory)[9]
· The United Nations Charter (Canada is a signatory)[10]
· Canada has ratified 7 Human Rights Treaties[11]
- UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
In advancing human rights from a Canadian perspective, areas covered by The Abraham Global Peace Initiative cover gender equality including protections of LGBTI persons; protections of children and youth especially from war and conflict; Indigenous affairs; human rights of refugees and displaced peoples; advancing freedom of religion or belief; championing Canada’s sustainable development goals; advancing pluralism and diversity in order to build inclusive societies. These areas which propels our work are all stated policy of the Government of Canada under its framework to “approach to advancing human rights”.[12]
